Short Story
You wake up to a strange sound outside your house. You look out the window and see something impossible: a machine you don't recognize, and stepping out of it... is you. An older version of yourself. They smile and wave you outside.
'I know this is a lot to take in,' they say, 'but I'm here to offer you something incredible. This machine can travel through time—past or future, any era you want. You can see how humanity began. You can see where it's headed. You can find the golden age, the moment when people finally got it right.'
They hold out their hand. 'So... do you want to find it?'
Opening Question
Would you take the opportunity to travel through time and explore other eras? Why or why not?
Follow-up: Is there a time in history you believe was the best era for humanity—or do you think that time hasn't come yet? Do you believe we will ever reach complete unity and peace as a human race?
Scripture Passage
"Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, 'Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.' After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 'Are you so dull?' he asked. 'Don't you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? For it doesn't go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.' He went on: 'What comes out of a person is what defiles them. For it is from within, out of a person's heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and defile a person.'"
— Mark 7:14-23 (NIV)"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."
— Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)Discussion Questions
According to Jesus in Mark 7:21-23, where does the real problem with humanity come from? If this is true, could there ever be a timeline in history—past or future—where people are not corrupted?
Hebrews 13:8 says Jesus is 'the same yesterday and today and forever.' What does this tell us about the solution to humanity's problem across every era and every culture?
If you could travel to any time period, you'd still bring your own heart with you. How does following Jesus shape not just your future, but who you are right now?
Conclusion
We often imagine that a different time or place would be better—that somewhere in history, humanity got it right. But Jesus taught that the problem isn't the era we live in. The problem is the human heart, and it travels with us wherever we go. The good news? Jesus is the same in every timeline. He is the constant example of what humanity should aspire to, and following Him will always shape us into the best version of ourselves—no matter when or where we are born.
Next Step
This week, instead of wishing you lived in a different time or circumstance, focus on the one thing that can actually transform you: following Jesus today. Read Mark 7:14-23 and identify one area of your heart that needs His work. Then take one step—through prayer, honest conversation, or changed behavior—to let Him shape your future self starting now.
