Hidden Treasure

Hidden Treasure

What happens when you find something of incomparable value? Exploring the kingdom of heaven through Matthew 13:44-46.

Short Story

A few years back, CNN ran a story about a man browsing through a Goodwill store. On one of the shelves, he spotted a watch with a $5.99 price tag. Something about it caught his eye, so he bought it. Turns out, it was a rare collector's piece—one of only 900 ever made. He ended up selling it to a collector for $35,000 in cash, plus a $4,000 watch thrown in to sweeten the deal.

Most people walked right past that watch. They saw a dusty old timepiece on a thrift store shelf. But one man saw something different—and it changed everything.

Opening Question

How would you feel if you were in this man's shoes?

Follow-up: Why do stories like this inspire us? What is it about the possibility of finding hidden value that gets our hearts racing?

Scripture Passage

"The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it."

— Matthew 13:44-46 (NIV)

Next Step

This week, take an honest inventory: Does your schedule, your priorities, and your sacrifices reflect someone who has found a priceless treasure? Identify one area where you can "cash in"—whether that's making time to read and pray, serving others, or walking away from something that's holding you back. Then talk to someone about what you discovered.
